History of Saputara

Saputara is a tribal area in Gujarat where the tribals living here during the festival of Holi and Nagpanchami worship the snakes on the banks of the Serpaganga River. Hence this place is called Saputara.  According to mythological belief, Lord Rama spent 11 years of his exile around this area.

Saputara is the only hill station in Gujarat located in the Dang district of Gujarat.  Saputara Hill Station, situated on the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, is 1000 meters above sea level.  Saputara Hill Station is a beautiful and serene mountainous region nestled in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra.

The geographical situation here is such that it does not get very hot even in the summer season.  The maximum temperature in the summer season goes up to 30 ° degrees.  The residents here are mostly tribal and are more dependent on farming and animal husbandry for their livelihood.  These people use the Dangi and Kukna language more in the language of a common language.

On the way to Saputara, this beautiful Gira Falls is situated near Girmal, a small place situated near Waghai in the Dang district.  The locals also call this waterfall as Girmal waterfall.  The Girmal Falls is the largest waterfall in Gujarat.

This waterfall originates from a small Gira river flowing through the plains and joins the Ambika River, making its way through the Satpura hills in Gujarat’s Saputara.  The length of the Gira River is only 130 kilometres.  The Gir Falls falls in the Ambika River from a height of about 30 meters.

The Gira Falls is also known as the Niagara Waterfall of Gujarat.  There are large rocks around the waterfall, on which you can enjoy the fallen waterfall.  Gira Waterfall is a rainy waterfall, so to see it, you should visit this place during the monsoon.  The nearest railway station to Gira Waterfall is Waghai Railway Station.

From the jewellery and attire of these people to the materials used in their daily routine, their traditional articles and their household items are shown in the museum.  Apart from this, the culture of these tribal communities, their folk music and the instruments used by them are also displayed in this tribal museum.

All the artefacts that remain in the museum feel very lively.  In this museum, workshops related to the lifestyle, culture and history of the tribal community are held here throughout the year.

And if you come to the Sunrise Point of Saputara during the rainy season, rainy waterfalls are seen falling from the surrounding mountains.

Hatgarh Fort, located at a distance of 6 km from Saputara, is another famous tourist spot in the Sahyadri ranges.  This fort is located at a place called Mulher in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built the Hatgarh Fort.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used this fort to monitor the invasion of enemies.  In a way, Hatgarh Fort served as a watchtower for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.  The elevation of Hatgarh Fort from sea level is around 3600 feet.  To reach the fort you have to climb a bit.

During the rainy season, the staircase built in the fort keeps the rainwater flowing rapidly, which gives a kind of exciting experience.  The fort offers very beautiful views of the villages inhabited at the foothills of the Sahyadri ranges.

Situated in Saputara Hill Station, the distance of the Nageshwar Mahadev Temple from the main city is only 1.5 kilometres.  Nageshwar Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is an old temple situated in the south part of Saputara Lake.  Nageshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

By the way, devotees and tourists keep coming to the Nageshwar Mahadev temple for the whole year.  But during the time of Shivaratri, there is a huge increase in the number of devotees visiting the temple.   Men are required to wear a dhoti given by the priest at the time of darshan in the temple.

If you are going to Saputara from Surat then 50 km before Saputara comes Waghai Botanical Garden.  This garden is one of the most suitable places to unwind before reaching Saputara.  Located in the foothills of the Sahyadri ranges, this botanical garden is rich and spread over an area of 24 hectares.

There are around 1400 plant species found in Waghai Botanical Garden.  The main centre of attraction of this park is the different varieties of bamboo found here.  There is also a canteen in the park for tourists to stay and eat.  Around 1 lakh tourists visit the Waghai Botanical Garden every year.

The distance from Saputara to Vasanda National Park is 53 kilometres.  Located in Navsari district of Gujarat, Vasanda National Park is a small-sized national park spread over a volume of 23 square kilometres.  The forest area of Wasanda National Park is quite dense and deep, there are many places inside the park where sunlight does not reach even in the summer season.

In such places as the garden, it is dark even during the daytime.  The main predator of the Wasanda National Park is the leopard and in addition to this, hyena, wild boar, sambar and four-horned deer are found in the park.  Apart from wildlife, this national park is also home to many migratory birds.

Purna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Dang district of Gujarat is named after the Purna River flowing in this region.  The distance from Saputara to Purna Wildlife Sanctuary is only 70 km.  This wildlife sanctuary is spread over an area of about 160 square kilometres and despite having such a small size forest, more than 700 species of plant species are found here.
